Rep. Candice Miller: Absolutely Unconscionable that Planned Parenthood Does Not Provide Mammograms

Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) issued the following statement after Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards confirmed that Planned Parenthood fails to provide mammograms at any of its facilities:

"On October 17th, 2012, during the second presidential debate, Obama said, "there are millions of women all across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood for not just contraceptive care --they rely on it for mammograms, for cervical cancer screenings.' Yesterday, during a House oversight hearing on Planned Parenthood, the organization's President, Cecile Richards, who claimed the organization provided mammograms in 2011, confirmed that not a single one of the over 650 Planned Parenthood clinics in the U.S. offers mammograms, unlike the estimated 13,540 federally qualified health centers across the U.S., which do.

"I find it absolutely unconscionable that Planned Parenthood, a women's health provider, fails to provide one of the most important cancer screening services for women. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women today will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, a cancer that is currently the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and the second leading cause of death for them. Yet, Planned Parenthood, which claims to provide high-quality healthcare services to women, does not even offer mammograms?

"Coupled with the outrageous revelations which surfaced over the summer, this shocking failure to provide women with one of the most critical cancer screening services underscores the need for Congress to continue its investigation into Planned Parenthood. Additionally, the House has sought, and should continue to seek, legislative measures that strip Planned Parenthood's eligibility to continue the use of federal funds."
